Beautiful edition of this wonderful book. Don't be afraid of Jane Austen, she is a joy to read.

I loved the characters, from the manipulative Fanny Dashwood to the handsome stranger in Willoughby and the boring yet kind Colonel Brandon. Marianne had extreme emotions, from falling in love immediately to almost dying of a broken heart. Elinor was the more sensible of the sisters, I felt she depicted Jane Austen in this novel.There were several aspects of this novel which really represented the time it was written in; marriage and life expectancy. Otherwise this is a timeless story, filled with witty observations and characters you may recognise from your own life.Marriage was a huge pre-occupation for women in Austen times, it determined everything about their lives. It wasn't just about who they married, it affected what their lifestyle would be, who they would socialise with, who their children could marry. Marrying for money was preferred (mostly by the brides) but everyone else involved didn't think it mattered, much better to marry someone rich who you could grow to tolerate than marry for love and be poor.Life expectancy also changes everything. At several points in the novel references were made to how long someone could expect to live. Mrs Dashwood (40) was only expected to live another 7 years or so, Colonel Brandon was thought extremely old at 35 to be looking for love, Marianne at 17 was already hoping she wouldn't end up as the maiden aunt. The average life expectancy in 1811 was 36, this includes the working class (80% of the population) so I would expect the middle and upper classes to last a little longer. So the pressure was on to marry and have children as early as possible with a hope of seeing your grandchildren before you're 40.If you're new to Jane Austen or are intimidated by older novels, my advice is just to dive in. If you like romantic stories, you'll love this. Don't focus too much on the language, you will get used to it as you go through. Focus on the characters and the emotions, they are truly timeless.I loved this book, it's a great introduction to the Austen world and I can't wait to read 'Pride and Prejudice' next month.

Lessons in love.

Sense and Sensibility is a novel full of the joys and woes of love, following the lives of the Dashwood family, and in particular the two sisters Elinor and Marianne who are the embodiments of the title. Elinor is the quietly reserved sister who overflows with good sense and practicality, while Marianne is of a wild romantic sensibility who is quick to love and feel, and does everything with a passion. When Elinor falls in love with Edward Ferrars it seems she has found a kindred spirit, but when circumstances keep them apart and he finds himself faced with the prospect of having to marry another, Elinor suffers her heartbreak in silence so as not to trouble her family. However when Marianne falls for Mr Willoughby and gives her heart entirely to him, she also believes she has made a good match, but his true feelings are tested and found wanting when his family threaten to cut him off if he marries Marianne. Edward however faces disinheritance in order to do right by Lucy Steele. Marianne feels her own heartbreak so keenly that she is completely insensible of her own sister's feelings, and while she plays the melodramatic role of one let down by love, Elinor continues to play the martyr to her own feelings. This novel depicts two sisters seemingly at opposites to each other, one ruled by her head and the other by her heart, however as the novel progresses Marianne appears to reign in her romantic sensibility as she gradually falls in love with the true hearted Colonel Brandon; and at the last Elinor shakes off some of her restraint to allow her to face Edward and tell him how she feels. This is a beautiful edition of a great book.

Everything - and i mean everything - about this book is a majestic masterpiece. The writing is beautiful (it's Jane Austen; it's a given), the characters are amazing. If you've read Jane Austen books before then you HAVE to buy this book. If you buy now you might even get it before Christmas (it's better to order yourself than drop hints for family members because they just have no clue, just wrap it up and write a tag for yourself - no one will be any the wiser trust me.)Don't get me started on the sheer BEAUTY of this novel. It's the Audrey Hepburn of book covers (one of the greatest actresses and people to ever exist by the way.) The design is amazing, the writing is amazing. There is absolutely NOTHING to stop you buying this book. NOTHING.In other words, order it and order it now my friends.

At first sight looks interesting

This is a provisional review, as I have not yet read the book, but so far just thumbed through it.I got a used ex-library copy from the USA, for just 1p + £2.80 delivery from Slategray Books UK.Have recently become interested in cold fusion, which now seems to be making a comeback as Low Energy Nuclear Reaction (LENR).I am currently reading "Fire from Ice", by Eugene Mallove, which give a great deal of detail about the politics of this matter at the time.This book was published in Sept1989, now 25 years ago, so is contemporary with the flurry of activity on this matter at the time.The book appears to give more a technical discussion, compared to Fire from Ice, so it should be interesting to read.Much has happened since this book was written, particularly with the development of E-Cat, by Andrea Rossi, using nickel and hydrogen, so have obtained the much more recent, but small, book, "Cold Nuclear Fusion", by Florian Ion Tiberiu Petrescu, 2012, to get a more current idea of how things have developed since this book was written.

not so much black as grey

I thoroughly enjoyed this book - having reservations about the subject, and in truth, about the author. However, Roberts portrays the complexities and contexts which have gone into making Halifax such a controversial figure. I also have to confess, at the onset, that I have always bought the line that Halifax was not so much a traitor, as a man devoid of a moral center. However paradoxical this may seem for a man of faith, Halifax's ability of dealing in absolutes probably encouraged a rather brazen realist streak in him, that coupled with Chamberlain, set him so apparantly apart from Churchill's audacity and faith in what Britain should stand for. It is on the strength of Robert's work here, on the skill, humour and sensitivity in which he presents this gaunt, silent man, that my views have been much modified. What is especially outstanding here, is Robert's ability to portray Halifax and yet retain his praise of Churchill - overcoming the crude polarity of the good and the guilty, the black and the white, that has so often distorted the historical account. There were places here where I laughed out loud and also, I am unashamed to say still, where a lump rose in my throat for all those people, `appeasers' and none-appeasers alike, who has the singular misfortune to live in a time when each choice was fraught with danger. There is some beautiful writing here.

An interesting analysis

The Holy Fox by Andrew Roberts is a very interesting take on the life of Lord Halifax. Lord Halifax is remembered to history as an arch-appeaser and this until I read this book was all that I knew of him. What I learnt was actually quite fascinating such as his role in India and his attempts to maintain order there. However, although Andrew Roberts tries hard to persuade that Halifax was not the arch-appeaser in 1938 or a total defeatist in 1940 his argument just doesn't seem to be strong enough in my opinion to show that history has dealt with Lord Halifax harshly. All in all it is a very good book with a well-paced narrative as well as some interesting analysis but at times it does seem to be trying too hard in its efforts to save Halifax from the judgement of history.

Justice for Halifax

Halifax reputation suffered, and has continue to suffer, for his name being linked with that of Neville Chamberlain and Appeasement.In arguing that this judgment is incorrect, Andrew Roberts has given us an important, and detailed revision of the years leading up the Second World War.He shows that Halifax saw Hitler in his true colours at the time of the Bad Godesberg meetings, and before the Munich Agreement.From this time on he worked for a more realistic understanding of Hitler's real aims, and for rearmament and conscription.Halifax came within a whisker of becoming Prime Minister in May 1940; the job was his to refuse. The Tory Party, and the King both wanted him, and it was argued that his place in House Lords was a barrier that could be removed.Halifax must have realised himself that he was no war leader, and, inspite of massive doubts within the Tory Party, Halifax supported Churchill's claim.From then on the story which unfolds is much less well known, and invites a re-assessment of Churchill's reputation.Churchill - known to Halifax as The Rogue Elephant - needed Halifax to argue against his wilder schemes. The book is particularly important on relations with the Vichy regime, the problems associated with the French Navy, and the differences between Halifax and Churchill on how these should be handled.It is not now very easy to understand that Britain was alone at this juncture, and that American support was very uncertain.However, Halifax's attachment to Chamberlain's name made him important enemies, one of whom, Roberts reveals, was newspaper magnate Lord Beaverbrook.When a new ambassador was needed in Washington, Halifax was not the first name mentioned. Beaverbrook saw to it that his name became prominent, and it is a blot on Churchill's reputation that he went along with this idea, almost certainly to rid him of the one minister in his cabinet who could stand up to him.It is not pleasant reading.A less time-specific reason for reading this book is that it portrays a now forgotten era when the aristocracy still dominated government in Britain.Halifax comes across as a figure who eschewed "short termism" - now the current plague of British politics.

Beautiful Edition of P&P

A beautifully designed edition of the most loved P&P.- There are plenty of beautiful full-page and small color illustrations all through the book. One of them could be opened. This makes it a perfect gift for young readers.- patterned endpapers- orange head, foredge and tail with a pattern.- the font is perfectly good for reading.However I could spot some spelling mistakes but these seem to be very rare. All in all I was satisfied with my purchase.

Gorgeous colouring book

I love this colouring book. Gorgeous pictures, and the fashion is correctly portrayed. Lovely thick pages, with colouring and script from the story.I have only one small criticism - the gloved hands of the ladies look like they are wearing mittens or socks, only on some pages. Looks a bit odd.Apart from that, this book is glorious to colour.Looking to buy Emma or Persuasion next if available.Elaine 5*****

Fantastic, must-read story, kindle edition has slight irritations

I would give this story 5 stars. I never read it as a student during my English Literature days, and I sorely missed out. Prompted to read it so I could help my own daughter with her GCSE, I couldn't put it down. Although the world has moved on considerably, the story itself seems fresh and exciting.I have a couple of niggles about the kindle edition (though, as it's free, I can't really have justification for complaint). Lots of words are emphasised in capital letters; whether these were originally italics I could not say. But there are a lot of them, maybe 2 per kindle page, and it rather feels as though you are reading a certain type of tabloid newspaper rather than a famous literary work! The other small niggle is that there are place names blanked out like this: "-------shire", which I'm sure cannot have been in the original.These are only niggles, however, and I would recommend it as an essential read for anyone who has never done so before.
