Trafalgar – The Nelson Touch by David Howarth is not, at the moment, available as a Kindle download. Instead I had to buy a hardcover copy for the sheer pleasure of reading it again. It didn’t disappoint. It is by far the best book about Trafalgar of the many I have read on the subject. Not only does Mr.Howarth make it easy to follow the sometimes confusing action of the various ships he does it with prose which at times is magnificently memorable. He describes why the battle was fought, the men of both sides, the commanders, the ships, the tactics and the outcome with vivid detail. His description of Nelson captures the reasons for his popularity and success without being fawning or overawed by his reputation. Villeneuve is treated with compassion and understanding and his considerable ability is pointed out on several occasions. The comments of various captains are given with caveats regarding their bias and their reasons. All in all a magnificent book – well worth five stars.

5Brilliant and exciting writing

I have just read this book for the first time, and it won't be the last. The author carried me along so effortlessly that I was almost there at the scene. This is a balanced view of events, and gives credit where credit is due...especially where the ill-fated Admiral Villeneuve is concerned. His personal tragedy is described with a long overdue sympathy, and the detailed knowledge of his situation makes the account of the battle all the more compelling. Nelson was the admiral who died that day in 1805, but poor betrayed Villeneuve clearly wished he had too.If you want to learn about Trafalgar, this is the book with which to start. It is also the book to which you will return after sampling all the others. I cannot praise it highly enough.
