Lost Era

This book portrays an era following the 2nd World War in Italy when religion, politics and opinions where at the same time polarised but had the commonality of humanity. It follows the strained relationship between two physical Leviathans the local priest, Don Cammillo and his idealogical adversary the local communist mayor, Peppone. It is an easy read with chapters of undemanding length yet containing complete stories. The stories encompass what seems unlikely violence and use of weapons but as the author relates in the introduction similar events did occur in Northern Italy at the time. The cartoon violence of the protagonists is wonderfully softened by the comments and observations from the Christ on the Cross that Don Cammilo speaks to in his church. A very heart-warming and humane book.

wonderful stuff

Maha's review really says it all; these charming books take you away from modern woes and worries, joining Don Camillo in his attempts to do well by both his flock and himself in beautifully lighthearted fashion, always funny but often poignant and a little thought provoking. When not fighting with Peponne he's fighting with his own conscience, trying to explain to Christ why he would be justified in doing the wrong thing, but invariably failing. All round it's a just a Lovely read, from a now lost world.

If you have not read any of Guareschi's novels- begin now!

I discovered Don Camillo as a 12 year old, on promotion to the adult library.I knew nothing of the politics/ historical background, but learned as I read.The disputes detween the catholic priest and communist mayor are amusing, fascinating and taught me so much about how people with differing beliefs can be real comrades at heart.Cammillos daily conversations with Christ, who so often takes the Communust mayors side, are wonderful.If you have not read these books, order them all now!
