Guareschi is certainly much more famous for his Don Camillo books. This collection of autobiographical essays however, holds the same gentle, and above all humane perspective on life that makes the Don Camillo books transcend political and temporal boundaries with no effort. The pieces are short and range from the seemngly absurd to the downright laugh-out-loud funny... but these are, as you begin to realise, the interaction of an intellectual process meeting a completely ordinary lifestyle. And there lies the beauty; in deriving such meaning from ordinary happenstances in the household. Guareschi gives to home life the same perspective that Monet gave the riversides of his home country. At times merry, at times wistful and always sane, Guareschi is a friendly hand on your shoulder as he points out the subtle and not-so-subtle variations on the human theme without the heat of a Maugham, without the intense philosophy of a Huxley, without the extreme-limits of a Golding, but with that special gentle touch thats all his own. Recommended a hundred times over for all of you out there :)
