5Death Amongst Writers
By M. Dowden
Vera Stanhope certainly has something to get her teeth into here. When she returns home one day so she finds Jack, her neighbour wanting to speak to her. His other half, Joanna has gone missing and he wants to find her. Of course for Vera this doesn’t take long but when she arrives at where Joanna is - a writing commune - so a murder takes place. Thus Vera is thrown right into a new case, with a neighbour as a prime suspect. But is her neighbour guilty of the crime? As our detective and her team get to work, will this be a case that they will be able to solve? With the scene and the various characters very well developed and believable so we are really drawn into this complex case, that definitely has something slightly Jacobean about it. As usual Vera does play her cards close to her chest, but it looks like, with no new leads she could be as baffled as everyone else. But with an idea, and a rather dangerous play on her part, could she actually get a result? As usual a gritty tale that should please Vera fans, this is definitely something that is meaty and well plotted, and should more than hold anyone’s interest. What I like is that our main detective here is far from perfect, and makes mistakes just like anyone else, but she always somehow manages to get back on track in her excitement and drive to get her culprit. And as is usual the characters are fully dimensional, all with their own lives, fears and ambitions. As with the other books in this series this is definitely one to read.

4Authors are evidently a cut-throat lot.
By Mick Kelly, author
Possibly not quite up to Ann Cleeves' usual very high standard, but good enough for me to finish in two days. The story revolves around a writer's workshop in an isolated part of Vera Stanhope's patch. A tutor is killed and each of the budding or published authors are under suspicion. No spoilers but it really is one of them. A chance (I think) for Ann Cleeves to have a bit of fun at the pretensions of literary authors and that is probably what pulls the quality down a tiny bit. Excellent characters and writing as usual.

5The Glass Room

Another 5* for Vera and her team, with a good plot that brings her neighbours who have only been fleetingly mentioned before, into the plot. I like Joe Ashworth who knows when to say things and when to stay silent. Holly I feel acts like a petulant five year old sometimes, and Charlie who is the perpetual scruff. And Vera of course, who is like ferret when it come to solving the murder. But they all work well together. For those who love the TV series, the books are as good as, if not better.
