From Andrew Roberts, author of the Sunday Times bestseller The Storm of War, this is the definitive modern biography of Napoleon. Napoleon Bonaparte lived one of the most extraordinary of all human lives. In the space of just twenty years, from October 1795 when as a young artillery captain he cleared the streets of Paris of insurrectionists, to his final defeat at the (horribly mismanaged) battle of Waterloo in June 1815, Napoleon transformed France and Europe. After seizing power in a coup d'etat he ended the corruption and incompetence into which the Revolution had descended. In a series of dazzling battles he reinvented the art of warfare; in peace, he completely remade the laws of France, modernised her systems of education and administration, and presided over a flourishing of the beautiful 'Empire style' in the arts. The impossibility of defeating his most persistent enemy, Great Britain, led him to make draining and ultimately fatal expeditions into Spain and Russia, where half a million Frenchmen died and his Empire began to unravel.More than any other modern biographer, Andrew Roberts conveys Napoleon's tremendous energy, both physical and intellectual, and the attractiveness of his personality, even to his enemies. He has walked 53 of Napoleon's 60 battlefields, and has absorbed the gigantic new French edition of Napoleon's letters, which allows a complete re-evaluation of this exceptional man. He overturns many received opinions, including the myth of a great romance with Josephine: she took a lover immediately after their marriage, and, as Roberts shows, he had three times as many mistresses as he acknowledged. Of the climactic Battle of Leipzig in 1813, as the fighting closed around them, a French sergeant-major wrote, 'No-one who has not experienced it can have any idea of the enthusiasm that burst forth among the half-starved, exhausted soldiers when the Emperor was there in person. If all were demoralised and he appeared, his presence was like an el

5Superb biography
By Steven Brown
I really enjoyed this book. I've been meaning to read a Napoleon biography for quite some time, as I've read several about Wellington, and as his arch rival (with a seemingly even more incredible life than Wellington), I thought it would be very interesting. After reading multiple reviews, I plumped for this - and I'm glad I did. It's a riveting read, following Napoleon right through his career, but is incredibly readable right from the start, drawing you into Napoleon's life, and understanding his background, and forming of his character and views (and how often he could've simply been lost to history as a footnote!)Great to read a historical biography like this that entertains as well as informs - highly recommended.

5Fantastic read bringing history to life
By Amazon Customer
This is a brilliant book. Andrew Roberts has a way with words that reads like a real adventure story bringing history to life as if it were yesterday. I felt he presented a real person with the talents and the flaws that we all possess. He just happened to have them in abundance and made most 25 year olds seem a bit lazy by comparison.I knew very little about Napoleon until I came across the BBC 3 part show Roberts brought to the screen. I would go as far as to say that it was only a name from history about a little guy who was a bit of a dictator, of ridicule and perhaps for his wife Josephine. How wrong could I have been. It was an engaging and lively history program with quick wit and comment from Roberts himself with a pragmatic approach to human frailties. The BBC show took me to the book and whilst the 3 parter was great, the book is brilliant. It is as some say a solid read weighing in at 900 pages and yet Napoleon was a remarkable character and lived a very active life. I cant imagine the book being any shorter truth be told. Like some I am not particularly interested in the real detail of the battles and yet without them its hard to get real handle on the way the man thought. Roberts enjoyment of his subject is contagious. I have since reading this book on trips to Paris found myself with a very different perspective on the city. He shone a very bright light on the man and the myth telling the story with a lighter filter than most from a British victor's perspective. I left the book feeling Napoleon had been judged unfairly by history and that he did indeed deserve the title Napoleon the Great.I am now off to read Napoleon and Wellington by the same author.I highly recommend this book if you lead people and are interested in gaining insight into inspiring those around you.

5Well-balanced study of a great leader
By ADAM
This is a BRILLIANTLY written biography of a brilliant man, whose achievements rivalled, or even exceeded, those of Alexander the Great.Love him or hate him, admire him or despise him, there is no doubting that Napoleon Bonaparte was a genius in several fields including: military, intellectual, writing, and government. Many of Bonaparte's ideas and developments remain valid in both France and many other countries. A good example of this is his 'Code Napoléon', a system of laws that forms the basis of many legal systems even today. He could be both ruthless and compassionate when dealing with those who were against him.Andrew Robert's well-researched, thorough biography provides a very well-balanced study of this Corsican born leader of France. It is a highly readable book which, if it were not for its physical weight, would be 'un-put-downable'.
