As a student of italian I found this a great course-book choice. It is harrowing, but beautiful, and easy to read. I'd definitely recommend this book, or its translation, to anyone looking to gain insight into the events it chronicles surrounding the holocaust. Read it, meditate on it, enjoy it!

By Neasa MacErlean
The last thing that survivors of Auschwitz forgot in the years after liberation in 1945 was the sound of the music that the German band played as inmates lined up in the central court. Just like the camp's logo (Work Makes Free), the jolly music was so totally unsuitable that it could only be interpreted as a very sick joke. These are the kind of insights that Primo Levi gives on every page of this calmly-narrated memoire. It is a fascinating book which would even make interesting reading for business people. It shows society at its worst - and how every kind of relationship degrades to its lowest possible level when trust and humanity are replaced with nihilism. Corrupt business grows in the Lager - and chemistry graduate Levi only survives because of the thefts (of brushes) that he carries out. The 24-year old Levi soon became an old man in the camp, surviving 13 months - four times the usual life expectancy of those men who entered Auschwitz and survived the initial 'selections'. For all the horrors of the book, the reader can feel moments of great pride - especially towards the end - that a man could retain his humanity in these conditions. And it takes just a day for the survivors to start respecting each other again once the Nazis abandon the camp at the end. I read this in Italian, having read it years ago in English. It feels more authentic in the original (but maybe I am making that up!).
